Ellen Weitkamp’s paintings emerge from a slow and meticulous process of collaging translucent and opaque layers, text, and varying perspectives onto shaped supports to capture the span of time. Her work depicts ordinary objects and scenes such as an unmade bed, an empty driveway, or the interplay of light on a kitchen counter. The overlapping of text from a postcard, on top of a blanket hidden by a sheer curtain allows words and spaces to be enveloped and revealed.
Weitkamp’s prints, on the other hand, depict an immediacy of place and presence through a direct drawing practice that shows more than what can be taken in in a passing moment: a subtle light shift on the side of a building, a funny pairing of similarly shaped objects, or a glass that is precariously close to the edge.
Ellen Weitkamp (she/her) received her MFA from Boston University in 2024, and her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2019. She currently resides in Portland, Maine.
